7 Day Hike Route Description


Port Edward to Port St. Johns
This seven day hike starts at the Wild Coast Sun and finishes in Port St. Johns. This is a self catered hike, and you will need to carry all your own equipment, camping gear and food.
Day 1
We hike along the beach from the Wild Coast Sun, and cross the Mzamba river. We continue walking along the beach until we get to Mnyameni river. We camp right next to the river, where there is some drinkable water nearby.
Day 2
We cross the river by boat and walk along the beach to Kwanya river. At Sikhombe we will explore the ship wreck and then proceed to Mtentu and camp on the northern side of the river
Day 3
We cross Mtentu river in the morning and enter the Mkambati Nature Reserve. This is an opportunity to see game, abundant bird life and pristine nature. We will walk past a ship wreck and view the waterfall that cascades straight into the ocean. After lunch we go to Gwegwe beach and then to Msikaba River which we cross by boat. We camp on the Southern bank of the river.
Day 4
This walk passes the light house and on to Kilroe beach. We will go the the site where the Grosvenor sank in 1782 and explore some of the salvage attempts. From there we go to Lambasi bay, cross the Mkhweni River and find our campsite under the milkwood trees near Lupatana.
Day 5
We walk past the top hat and get to Waterfall Bluff (pictured). From there we go to Mamba Pools and the Cathedral Rock. From there we view Mfihlelo falls and finish the day at Sihatsha Camp.
Day 6
We walk past Mbotyi village in the morning and enter a very scenic section with beautiful views, beaches and cliffs. We cross the Manteku River by boat and camp on the Soutern bank.
Day 7
On this day we walk on the beach a lot, with some hills inbetween, until we get to Ntafufu River. We swim across and finish the last stretch to Port St. Johns with a long beach walk.

5 Day Hike Route Description


Msikaba to Port St Johns

This 73 km, 5 day, 4 night hike is over varying terrain, with lovely beaches, amazing rock formations and waterfalls that cascade straight into the ocean. Dotted along the coastline are beautiful village and friendly Pondo people.
Day 1 – 11 km
We start our hike from the south side of Msikaba mouth, past the light house to Mbaxeni River. From there we will go toe the site where the Grosvenor sank in 1782 and then go inland to view the Garden of Eden where there is a beautiful pool for swimming. We spend the night in Rhole village.
Day 2 – 15 km
We start hiking at about 8, and cross the Mkhweni beach to get to Luphatana (where waves shoot high up into the sky - pictured above). From there it is a short walk to Waterfall Bluff (one of only 5 waterfalls that fall straight into the sea in the world) and Mamba Pools where we normally swim and have lunch. From there we walk to Cathedral Rock and then to Mfihlelo falls. We spend the night in Cutwini village.
Day 3 – 14 km
We will hike from the village through the forest to Shelly Beach and then to Mbotyi. Lunch is on the beach at Mzimpunzi. The afternoon is full of beautiful scenery, we cross the Mzintlava River by ferry and reach Manteku village where we overnight.
Day 4 – 12 km
We hike along the coast to Dakane and Ingo beach, renowned for their black sands. We will swim across Ntafafu River and then hike to Poenskop where we overnight.
Day 5 – 7 km
We hike through the village to Agate Terrace, and then there is a long beach walk to the mouth of the Umzimvubu River, which we will cross using the local ferry service. This brings us to Port St Johns.

Hiking Information

1. Prices
You will pay R 200 per day for catered hiking and R 350 per day for horse riding. These prices include accommodation, guides, ferries and other tour expenses. Accommodation includes supper, breakfast and lunch. Hot water for washing will be provided at each homestead. Towels are not supplied.
For self catered hikes we charge R50 per person per day. This price includes guides and ferries, but no food. An additional R60 per day is charged for the services of a porter, should they be required.
2. Booking Procedure
It is advisable to first contact Wild Coast Trekking to ensure that there is still space available on the particular venture or tour. A booking form will be faxed to you, please complete it and send it along with a 10% non-refundable deposit to confirm your reservation.
3. Cancellation Procedure
Cancellation of any booking must be received in writing and acknowledged by Wild Coast Trekking. If a booking is cancelled with the consent of Wild Coast Trekking, the latter shall retain the full deposit.
4. Transport
We can arrange transport from Port St Johns to Msikaba (where we start most hikes) if you need it. Also we can arrange transport from Port St Johns to Port Edward on the longer hikes.
5. Guides
Our guides are young, experienced and qualified. They are registered with the Field Guides Association of South Africa (FGASA) and South African Tourism. They were born and raised in Pondoland.
6. Sleeping
On the catered hike you will be sleeping each night in a Pondo hut (rondavel - pictured above) that can sleep 12 people. Each person will be supplied with his/her own mattress with duvet, pillow and clean sheets. Drinking water is provided at each overnight stop, and at some places along the way. It is advisable to carry at least a litre of water per person.
On the non catered hike we sleep in sheltered positions where there is water available. Some form of purifcation is required at some water sources.
7. Clothing
You will need a pair of hiking boots, and sandals for crossing rivers. You will need comfortable and cool clothing to walk in. You will also need warm clothing for the evening (long pants and a warm jacket). It is advisable to bring sunscreen and a hat. We have a big problem with pepper ticks, so please also bring tick repellent.
