5 Day Hike Route Description

Msikaba to Port St Johns

This 73 km, 5 day, 4 night hike is over varying terrain, with lovely beaches, amazing rock formations and waterfalls that cascade straight into the ocean. Dotted along the coastline are beautiful village and friendly Pondo people.
Day 1 – 11 km
We start our hike from the south side of Msikaba mouth, past the light house to Mbaxeni River. From there we will go toe the site where the Grosvenor sank in 1782 and then go inland to view the Garden of Eden where there is a beautiful pool for swimming. We spend the night in Rhole village.
Day 2 – 15 km
We start hiking at about 8, and cross the Mkhweni beach to get to Luphatana (where waves shoot high up into the sky - pictured above). From there it is a short walk to Waterfall Bluff (one of only 5 waterfalls that fall straight into the sea in the world) and Mamba Pools where we normally swim and have lunch. From there we walk to Cathedral Rock and then to Mfihlelo falls. We spend the night in Cutwini village.
Day 3 – 14 km
We will hike from the village through the forest to Shelly Beach and then to Mbotyi. Lunch is on the beach at Mzimpunzi. The afternoon is full of beautiful scenery, we cross the Mzintlava River by ferry and reach Manteku village where we overnight.
Day 4 – 12 km
We hike along the coast to Dakane and Ingo beach, renowned for their black sands. We will swim across Ntafafu River and then hike to Poenskop where we overnight.
Day 5 – 7 km
We hike through the village to Agate Terrace, and then there is a long beach walk to the mouth of the Umzimvubu River, which we will cross using the local ferry service. This brings us to Port St Johns.
